Dark Secrets

So the theme for this week is “Dark Secrets”.
I, of course, do not have any secrets. And even if I did have any secret(s) I would not tell you I had it/them. The best way to keep a secret secret is to not let people know that you are keeping a secret in the first place. Nobody tries to uncover something they don’t even know exists. One of the best ways to keep your secrets secret is to gain a reputation for being completely unable to keep a secret. Once everyone knows that you are a blabber mouth they don’t even look to see if you are actually keeping secrets. And at that point your secret becomes almost immune to discovery, no matter how dark your secret is.
Another good way to keep a secret is to tell the truth in such a way that no one will believe you. Lay you secret out in the full light of day, but make it so outrageous and unbelievable that nobody will believe it.

“You mean that mild mannered and devoted stay-at-home-dad of three beautiful children actually writes obscene pornography on his laptop in the dead of night?” “No way that could be true.”

Also, in regards to Dark Secrets, I am not very dark. I don’t got in for any Gothic stuff much. And I am no fan of horror. Vampires and zombies, neither the dark ones of old nor the cute, cuddly ones of today, hold much interest for me. I like my stories light and fluffy.

I blame my idyllic childhood.

I was raised a good Irish catholic, steeped in hypocrisy, lies and secrets. But as a teen I started to read science fiction, and imported America SF written by hippies and right-wing libertarians at that. Drugs are good, government is bad :) Well, OK, I actually read everything I could get my hands on from classic Asimov, Clarke and Heinlein to cutting edge Cyberpunk (this was the 80’s). But the theme that got under my skin was the search for individual freedom. And the fundamental foundation of freedom is truth. Only by being true to yourself can you become truly free. And the first step in being true to yourself is to be true to others.

“There is freedom in truth and truth in freedom.”

The ultimate truth is being true to yourself. Once you have achieved a perfect balance of conscious and subconscious, id and ego, mind and body, then you can truly become free.
And once you have achieved a state of freedom and congruency with yourself then you can tell the most outrageous lies and everyone will believe them. And any secrets you want to keep get kept.
Without any guilt you never betray yourself.

So all in all I guess this post is just a long winded way of saying that I have no dark secrets. And so perhaps I should just leave it at that.
